Wow. Had to open this can o' worms, eh?

There is a whole nationalization process that our country has for people wishing to emigrate and become citizens. I am fully aware of this, as my mother became a U.S. citizen not too long ago, emigrated from Germany.

Yes, the process is time consuming, and being a bureaucracy, is not without pitfalls and need of revision. But it is there for people who meet the criterion and wish to become U.S. citizens. Until she became a citizen, she was a resident alien. Green card and all. Paid into the system.

Guess what? Wholly opposes any idea of amnesty other than political refugee from complete tyrannical government. Why? She went through the process, and knows what it entails. Currently, there is an English proficiency requirement. Is this a bad thing that those wishing to be a part of our country speak the language? Some would have you believe so. There is also an American History requirement and some knowledge of the Constitution required (yes, the unabridged version). All of which she studied for and took the required tests, et al. According to mom, not at all that difficult.

So, I still support the legal channel of emigrating to the United States. By all means, if you want to be a citizen, there is a system in place for that. However, it will take some time, and it is not perfect.

If, however, a person decides to be here without the consent of our government, they are not “undocumented workers” or “undocumented citizens”. They are ILLEGAL ALIENS. Period. No amount of PC speak changes the fact that they are in violation of our laws. Let us look at that for a moment. Taken directly from dictionary.com:

illegal alien
–noun
1. a foreigner who has entered or resides in a country unlawfully or without the country's authorization.
2. a foreigner who enters the U.S. without an entry or immigrant visa, esp. a person who crosses the border by avoiding inspection or who overstays the period of time allowed as a visitor, tourist, or businessperson.

And just to be sure we understand:

il•le•gal
–adjective
1. forbidden by law or statute.
2. contrary to or forbidden by official rules, regulations, etc.: The referee ruled that it was an illegal forward pass.

Not exactly what I would call upstanding citizen material, now would you? These people are lawbreakers. I am tired of hearing about our politicians, people we supposedly elected to support our laws and run our government, trying to usurp and circumvent those laws. Here in the People’s Republik or Kaliforneeah, it is no longer allowed for our Police Officers to check people they pull over for citizenship. There are even measures being bandied about that they cannot impound the vehicles of unlicensed drivers. You can bet that these individuals don’t have insurance, and would win that bet over 90% of the time. All in the name of being “Politically Correct”. How nice. I guess soon it will be required of me to house/feed/clothe these people, just so they don’t feel disadvantaged.

And one other thing, if they are so proud of their heritage that they prefer to display their flag, why not go display it where it belongs?

I apologize. I started off well, but am now just discouraged. Good post Heidi, but I know what it feels like to have your fingers in the dam and the cracks are spreading…

There are two essential factors for immigration: push factors (forced migration) resulting from war, famine, etc., and pull factors.

United States law acts as a pull factor because there are no consequences for breaking our laws if you are an illegal immigrant. The benefits (other than never going to jail) is free medical care, new born babies are American citizens, tax-free income, and if you murder an American citizen, there is no extradition if you can make it back across the border.

We would not have illegal aliens if our laws protected US citizens as much as they do Mexicans and others who transgress over the border. I’ve often thought about sneaking into Mexico, renouncing my US citizenship, and then sneaking back just so that I can get all these benefits. I might have done it too, except we Americans have self-respect.

eric, don't lose heart - at somepoint common sense MUST prevail.

heidianne jackson

mustang, good analogy, except for the "new born babies are American citizens" - it's just flat out wrong. it is important to note that it was never the intention of the authors of the 14th amendment to provide citizenship to those born to illegals.

in fact, in explaining the citizenship clause in the amendment that he helped to author, senator jacob howard wrote this: "...will not, of course, include persons born in the united states who are foreigners, aliens, or who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers accredited to the government of the united states..."

i believe that the pertinent clause is "and subject to the jurisdiction thereof". if you are not a citizen nor a legal alien you would NOT be subject to the jurisdiction of the united states.

another nifty tidbit in the 14th amendment is the affirmation that the rights guaranteed to us in the second amendment are NOT a collective guarantee. meaning the idiots over at the brady campaign have simply ignore the 14th amendment when they spew their crap about the 2nd amendment being a guarantee that the states can have armed militias.

check this out - it was written by robert greenslade in 2003 and published by the sierra times - http://www.tysknews.com/Depts/ 2n...eenth_amend.htm

An excellent post, and it proves this is a complicated matter (on one hand), but on the other it seems very simple. Illegal is illegal. I cannot STAND Geraldo. Did you know his real name is Johnny Rivers? He had it changed to Geraldo Rivera, at least that's what I was told, could have been a joke on me.

Robert (ConservativeCommentary)

This is one of the most serious issues that our country has faced in the last century - except that we aren't facing the issue.

Oklahoma has passed a law making it illegal to hire a non-American citizen before hiring an American citizen. There are reports that as many as 20,000 illegals have left Oklahoma City in the past few weeks because their gravy train may be drying up there.

Gayle

Great coverage on this most maddening issue, Heidi! I simply can't believe what's going on in this country, and I have a hard time trying to figure out people like Governor Spitzer who wants to give illegal immigrants Driver's Licences, and Hillary who says she doesn't agree and does agree with Spitzer, all it the same breath!

debbie - he was actually born jerry (maybe gerald, not sure, but always went by jerry) rivers. his mother is, apparently, hispanic and he changed his name to (i think) make him more exceptable to the hispanic community. although, i believe that rivera is an italian name, not spanish (at least according to a former exchange student of our from sicily). i just don't like him either. although, on hannity & colmes last night, he did say he thought that birth control should not be available to a child who is below the age of consent without parental approval...

heidianne jackson

robert, been watching that pretty closely. usa today had an article on the 29th about this - http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-10-29-oklahoma-law_N.htm

i love the last line in the article from charle kuck:

"There's nothing you can legally apply for if you're here illegally," he says. "If you're attesting that you've applied for (legal residency), you'd either be lying or putting yourself into deportation proceedings."

he says it like it's a bad thing...

heidianne jackson

ya know, gayle, i watched hillary over and over on that answer and i STILL have no idea what she thinks. check out the new link i put at the bottom of the post for patrick's post of fred's statement. whew! now that was a convoluted sentence if ever there was one...

patrickdaniel

Yep, shut down the border now!
I cant believe Gov. idiots who want to give driver's licenses to Illegals!! Ahh what part of Illegal don't they understand!? Ahhh they're criminals!! Kick then the hell 0ut!
Appeasement doesn't work!

I was appalled at a New Lowe's just built in the area...freakin' Spanish everywhere! Even through the PA system. BOYCOTT Lowe's!

Now I know some Spanish people in SD and have worked with them..there are lots who value family and love America.

One problem is that the 14th was ruled to include anyone born in the USA so long ago (1898) that it's hard to change it back to its original intent.

heidianne jackson

patrick daniel - we'd have to boycott our entire government system as we have expanded and expanded to do everything bilingually. not right, but until someone gets around to making english our official language there is nothing to be done for it.

heidianne jackson

patrick, i prefer not to get such pertinent information from wikipedia. you only got half the story and this is why it is believed that if we can get a case back to the supreme court, based on the 1889 (not 1898) ruling in us v. kim ark and the previous ruling in the "slaughterhouse cases" of 1873 and 1884.

this is a great site for more information:
http://www.14thamendment.us/birthright_citizenship/original_intent.html

if you folow the sources on this this site, you will see that in terms of the supreme court rulings there was NO change to the original intent.

Jennifer

Great post Heidi!! I'm not sure what else to say on this that hasn't been said. I've read about what Robert mentioned and I thinkit's terrific. I can tell you though, in NJ, hippo's will fly before that happens here!

patrickdaniel

Ah two patricks here..glad I'm a Daniel!
Yes English should be out National language!
