It's the tip of a giant, not-so-submerged-anymore iceberg. These veiled trips into utter pc brainwashing are going to be put forth as "normal", with all who object or disagree being clearly, publicly labeled as evil dissenters. Better put on your fighting gear...

As I keep whining: THE MEDIA HAS TO STOP.

We have to stop the mischaracterizations, the generalizations, and downright LIES about conservatives...... This is a perfect case in point. But, what can we DO? Blog, blog, blog...to conservatives (mostly), call conservative talk show which is listened (mostly to conservatives), write letters to the editors and hope they publish them..etcetc? WHAT ELSE?

We can't let them get away with this..but they SURE ARE.

And, OH, did I mention I think I have a crush on Michael Steele?!!! HAA!!! Mr. Z sees him and says "Z.........there's MICHAEL STEELE!" tease, tease!!

Karen

I'm in total agreement on Michael Steele. Really wish the RNC members would show some insight and elect him to lead the party at headquarters now.

heidi jackson

got my bible and my gun and my vice - what else shall i bring, di?

heidi jackson

oh z, i totally have a crush on him too! every time he comes on mr. j says "heidianne our other man is on, better come quick!"

but as for how to go about fighting? we must take it to them where they are. yes we must continue to blog and watch the conservative shows and listen to conservative radio, but we must go further.

when they print these things in the paper or other print media, we must send them a response that cc:s in the editor, other mouthpieces and everyone we know - regardless of political persuasion. when say these things on television, we must call the network they said it on, send an email to the commentator, the producer and the heads of all of their sponsors. and don't forget everyone you know.

if all of us do this, the powers that be will come to realize (learn?) that there are at least as many of us as there are those on the hard-core left. we defeated the last attempt at immigration "reform", we did it with mcdonald's honoring homosexuality and tysons with their holiday silliness. we can defeat this idiocy if we all become vigilant and FIGHT!!

Angel

amen girl!..well for now...at least Israel is pushing back the hordes!!! :)

I have to agree with Newt Gingrich.

The song marginalizes and stigmatizes Conservatism, it DOES NOT "challenge political correctness" in any meaningful way. "Barack the magic negro" smacks of sour grapes and it is hareful, sophomoric and "inappropriate."

People who defend this sort of thing, HAVE TO accept the smearing of black Conservatives (like Rice and Steele) as "traitors to their race," etc.

It's the same thing.

Con servatives HAVE TO win the battle of ideas and we must accept that we can't use ethnic and cultural insults eeven when our adversaries do.

I don't subscribe to the view that that puts us at any great disadvantage.

THE problem for Conservatism is that we haven't hammered the racist left ENOUGH when they smear the likes of Rice and Steele....and this sort of thing makes future attempts to do that seem more "tongue-in-cheek" than serious, on our parts.

America elected Obama NOT "Liberal America."

Quite frankly, John McCain DIDN'T deserve to win, after running one of the most incompetent Presidential campaigns in U.S. history.

The Hastert-DeLay Congresses abandoned Gingrich's principles and standards and they've reaped what they sewn - the dislocation of American Conservatism.

Conservatism isn't going to fight its way back to relevancy via juvenile insults, it's actually going to take some very hard work and self-reflection.

FJ

Michael Steele was Robert Ehrlich's "magic negro". He's a nice guy, but he's hardly a conservative. The MD RNC used Steele to split the black vote (30% in the People's Republic of MD) and it didn't work real well... although black Democrats are still pissed at having Ben Cardin steal last years Democratic Senate nomination from Kweise Mfume.

Steele always was and always will be a political "gimmick". Just like Barack Obama.

I don't care who takes over the RNC provided it's a conservative... a not some namby pamby conservative who's going to fret about songs about "magic negroes".

JMK

"Steele always was and always will be a political "gimmick". Just like Barack Obama." (FJ)

Barack Obama, like Mike Steele is a "political gimmick" that works!

Obama won a race he deserved to win, given how inept McCain's campaign was. The Obama campaign would've been tough for ANY opponent this year. Maybe Romney would've had better economic bona fides (he WOULD HAVE) but even he'd have had a real up hill battle against a very well run Obama campaign.

There are maniacs, who claim to be "Conservatives," who wish Ted Kennedy "would just die quickly," and those kinds of dopes deserve to be as marginalized as the Daily Kos Kids and the MoveOn dufuses.

It's incumbent upon Conservatives to tamp down their own kooks, ESPECIALLY when Conservatism is under the gun as it is now.

Z

FJ....where do you differ greatly with Michael Steele and his conservatism? I'm truly curious. I have never heard him say anything that isn't SMALL GOVERNMENT, LOW TAXES, etc etc.... Tell me, I really would like to know because I'm BIG on this guy and I need to know if I've missed something.

Steele is too smart to allow himself to be a 'gimmick', he's a partner in a successful law firm, etc., he doesn't need the RNC or Republicans, for that matter.......

I'm with JMK on this one...except I don't think Steele's a gimmick that works...I just think he WORKS. How long are we going to have parties in this country in which, every time we have a minority, they're called a 'GIMMICK'? That's scary to me. He's a Republican. He's a Black Republican. He's a smart Republican. That all works for me.........

And JMK's right about the dopes who say they wish Kennedy would die have to be stopped; We hear FAR FAR FAR less nasty stuff like that from the Right than we do the Left (Huffington had to literally CLOSE DOWN because the lefties had such a nasty field day when Tony Snow died, remember? I've never seen anything CLOSE to that or the death wishes to Cheney regarding his heart, etc..EVER from the Right).....BUT, the MEDIA HOLDS OUR FEET TO THE FIRE MUCH MORE THAN THEY DO THE LEFT so the public sees and hears that and it's that idiotic "REPUBLICANS ARE EVIL" crap again. I'm quite sure that Huffington closing down was not publicized in the media..imagine if Michelle Malkin had had to shut down because so many Conservatives went THAT UGLY ON ANYBODY's DEATH? This is why I resent and love COulter at the same time. What she says is RIGHT but she is SO ascerbic she sounds like a kook and every good thing the public ought to hear is covered over from the noise of the Left screeching about her style; because the substance is RIGHT and SCARES THEM.
Listen for it: the Right says something worth hearing and they're almost always kooky ascerbic deliveries (Rush, Coulter, Savage, etc.)so the left crowds it with "How HORRID is that STYLE, 'Ann said those widows are WRONG...gasp', etc" so Americans won't hear the GREAT SUBSTANCE there.

I'm bloviating, sorry (sorry, i shouldn't use that word because I'm SO not an O'Reilly fan most of the time, but.... it fits!)

I was being a little tongue-in-cheek.....a "gimmick that works" is really NOT a gimmick at all.

Steele and Gingrich are right on this issue. Conservatism does not need anger right now, it needs introspection.

Bush Jr was perhaps the MOST alluring Keynesian ("Rockefeller-wing") Republican in history. He seduced the Right with Faith, tax cuts and confronting radical Islamic terrorism (all good things), BUT he also spent more money (even adjusted for inflation) on reckless social spending than LBJ did and although he and McCain fought for oversight and regulation of Fannie and Freddie, they weren't effective and they didn't see fit to go to the people...the way Reagan would have.

The Right-wing kooks who publically wish the worst for Ted Kennedy (a hideous Leftist) and Obama are no different than the Left-wing kooks who rejoiced over Tony Snow's death and guffawed over the Cheney's gay daughter. It's despicable no matter which side it's coming from. You're right about Anne Coulter, as well....great substance, poor delivery. She's in the tauting business and for her writing niche, business can be good, but the results (for her side) pretty poor.

Conservatives HAVE to be better than that.

We can't afford not to be.

The "battle of ideas" is about winning converts, not insulting your opponents. Anger and idiocy don't score points even if they make the hurler feel good for a moment.

Z

JMK..SUCH GOOD STUFF in your comment.

I HARP ON THE MEDIA. These conservative bloggers, all wonderful and all well-meaning and full of Love of Country and love of Conservativism, etc etc etc., are so busy talking about FOCUSING the Conservative MESSAGE and HONING and GETTING BACK ON TRACK.....all that's important BUT, it's THE MEDIA.

See, this is why I'm so angry at Coulter, Savage, Rush, etc...they have to go overboard with STYLE to get their messages across but that OVERBOARD gives lefties a chance to attack their style so loudly the substance is lost, you see my point? AND THE MEDIA LOVES THIS AND DOES IT SOOOO WELL. YOU HAVE TO ADMIT.

Yes, we have to FOCUS the message but we have to SOLVE THE MEDIA PROBLEM. We have to stop setting ourselves up for ridicule because it takes SO LITTLE for them to get going on the Right. And the cover SO much of the leftist atrocious behavior (i.e. Sandy Berger, Wm Jefferson, etc etc... did you know CNN had an (R) next to Blagojevich's name when the scandal first hit? YUP!) THIS HAS TO STOP.
Insulting opponents, anger and idiocy only give the MEDIA the moment...

this has to STOP. You can be forceful, and heard and respected better if you just SAY THE WORDS..get the message out there. Michael Steele, in my humble opinion, is good for that...REALLY good.

And he's marvelous to boot!. OOPs...sorry (I CAN'T HELP IT< HEIDIEANNE!!!)

Otto - American Interests

Have to admit you are consistent. Great analysis and learning … In possession of a Gun, bible and vice, what else is needed? Moreover, I do appreciate your recent visit and thereby support at AI. Take care and have a blessed 2009.

Well, there are two problems Conservatives face regarding the media. The primary one is that they lack ownership of any major media organs. The NY Times, the WaPo, ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, not to mention PBS and NPR are all pretty hard-Left.

In fact, FoxNews is NOT really a “Conservative outlet.” It’s decidedly Centrist (straight down the middle news-wise) so it SEEMS “Right-wing” compared to the rest of the hard-Left media. Even Fox’s Commentators, most notably, Bill O’Reilly, who is a great interviewer, is smart and at least traditionalist in outlook, is basically a slightly Left-of-Center commentator with "New York sensibilities" - he supports the anthropomorphic global warming viewpoint, supports a “work-visa program” for ILLEGAL immigrants (a de facto amnesty program) and claims that oil companies were behind the global price surge in oil (it was demand from rapidly industrializing India and China).

The primary “Conservative voices” heard on the MSM are all Commentators. Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Anne Coulter, Mike Savage and Bill O’Reilly are ALL Commentators, but they're excoriated AS IF they are “biased newscasters,” as the anchors at ABC, CBS, CNN and NBC all are!

Moreover, Liberal Commentators, like the hopelessly deranged Keith Olbermann and sycophantic Chris "softball" Mathews, are NEVER excoriated by the same people who claim to have such a problem with the far less wild and deranged Anne Coulter and Mike Savage. So, the problem, at least in my view, ISN’T “the style” of Conservative commentators, as the likes of Mathews and Olbermann are consistently far more “over-the-top,” the problem is that America’s majority voice has been bottled up by a decidedly Leftist media elite.

The primary problem for Conservatives with the Media is control, the second one is access. Right now, Conservatives are consigned to a veritable media “reservation” – primarily Talk Radio and some Left-wing kooks want to eradicate that outlet as well.

In FACT, three of the four major networks (ABC, CBS, CNN and NBC) SHOULD be Conservative in tone and outlook.

Right now, the print media is in real trouble and that SHOULD provide a golden opportunity for some well-heeled and opportunistic Conservatives to look to revitalize that medium by delivering the equivalent of a print styled FoxNews, but the problem with that, and most Conservatives seem unaware of it, is that wealthy Americans are NOT Conservative and certainly not all that pro-market.

I know a lot of Conservatives ASSUME that wealthier people are naturally more Conservative, as they think, “These guys have the most to lose in a socialist environment,” but that’s not how the wealthy see it and the fact is THEY’RE right and we’re wrong on that issue.

While it’s long been proven that the government-run economy doesn’t work, the government-managed (heavily regulated and controlled) certainly CAN work AND it has the added benefit (from the perspective of the already wealthy) of cementing the gains of the very rich in place, as it freezes the free-for-all of the market in place, with them at the top!

So, the wealthy are NOT “natural allies” of Conservatives and that’s why the “Rockefeller-wing" of the GOP (the Bush’s, McCain’s, Whitman’s, etc.) ALL disdain Supply Side policies and Conservative principles.

Until more Conservatives realize that and recognize what an uphill battle this grassroots movement faces, we aren't going to make much headway.

The ONLY reason Ehrlich picked Steele as his Lt Gov. was to split off black democrats in his race against a Kennedy in a heavily Democratic state and as an appeal to liberals. Ehrlich IS a staunch conservative, and if anybody should be given a shot a higher office or running the RNC, it's him, NOT Steele. Steele is very pro-affirmative action, anti-death penalty, and was a pawn in liberal legal lawsuits in Maryland that prevented black (but not white) felons from being executed.

If you want a pro-business Republican, then Steele's your guy... but I'm a social conservative who could care less about picking winners and losers in the government contracting business. Steele = Bush-lite.

goat

It was a lame parody that made more fun of Al Sharpton than Obama but it was still pretty tactless of Saltsman to use it. I too support Michael Steele for the RNC and would be happy with Blackwell, the others just seem clueless to me.

Jeremy Kareken

We have to remember the context of the term "Magic Negro" too. A Magical (or Magic) Negro is a term for a type of stock character in films and stories, a wise black American who fixes things for white people in the movies. Morgan Freeman frequently plays the type. And Spike Lee often used the term himself discussing how black people are used in films. And one can easily see how the persistent myth and role of the Magic Negro is being foisted on Obama by a largely white electorate. I don't know if the singer realized the context or has an interest in film criticism, but he's not wrong. As for me, I expect he'll be a President, and the Democrats who believe this is some kind of second coming will either be sorely disappointed, or as delusional as they are in the myths of Roosevelt and Kennedy.
